The redevelopment of Powdermill Square includes the construction of 60 new residences on a 4.5 acre brownfield site in downtown Andover, Massachusetts. Presently, the site is a collection of abandoned homes, vacant mill buildings and scattered construction debris. The master plan for the site locates the new buildings along the existing streets, recreates a traditional downtown streetscape, and turns the interior of the site into a new park fronting on the Shawsheen River. An existing mill building overlooking the falls will be renovated into upscale contemporary flats, taking advantage of the rustic post and beam construction of the existing building. Huntress Associates was responsible for the design of the site master plan, including building massing and conceptual layout; Coordination of all site improvements with the project civil engineer and architect, and; Coordination of the projects review and approval by the Andover Planning Board.
The new master plan has been approved by the Planning Board, and construction is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2004.
